In 2016 Laura started a homeless voter registration campaign to bring awareness to *Measure H. Laura spent the next few weeks tabling at homeless shelters, visiting people in parks, washes, and service centers determined to get people registered to vote.  While tabling at a winter shelter she saw a woman who had bled through her pants and was pleading with staff for period products and new clothes.  When Laura asked the staff why there were no period products in the restrooms, the staff expressed that they do not receive funding for these products.  The next day Laura took action and sat in front of a Walmart with a box and a sign that read “collecting pads and tampons for homeless shelters.”  Laura learned that in fact, homeless service providers do not receive any funding for these supplies. It was from this experience that Sisters On the Streets was birthed.

Sisters Laura and Alycia started spreading awareness of period poverty and collecting donations from the community.  High school students would start their own hygiene drive and use the hours toward their hours to the community service needed to graduate, cancer survivor groups would host drives, community activist would donate, and in 2020 *The Alliance For Period Supplies reached out to SOTS to join forces.

Where we are now.  It’s 2022 and we are still in a global pandemic.  When the world shut down we kept going.  We expanded our partnerships and with a generous donation from U by Kotex, we were able to supply over 60 agencies in Los Angeles County with free period supplies.  As of today we supply over 80 agencies and 4 high schools with period supplies.  We have collected and distributed over 420,000 period products thanks to community and corporate donations.  But periods don’t stop… AND NEITHER DO WE!

Sisters on the Streets is a movement.  A movement dedicated to Ending Period Poverty in Los Angeles.  We hope to inspire other to join this movement wherever you are.  Get out, Get active, Get organized and smash the pavement!
